My Thoughts:
This first book in the Daughters of Fortune series features the Price sisters, Jinx & Esme, daughters of newspaper magnate, August Price. Set in the gilded age of 1896, the age of debutantes, wealth and high society, the family is on a social footing with the likes of the Astors, the Rockefellers and the Vanderbilts.
Esme longs to be free of society’s rules and regulations… she wants to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a journalist, make a name for herself, and become heir to his newspaper empire. But her parents have different plans in store for her, an arranged marriage to a man she has no interest in.
Jinx the younger of the two would happily take her place in society, she longs to be a “deb”, to be invited to all the grand balls, to search for a wealthy husband so she can be known as the hostess of “the” event of the season.
On the eve of Esme’s marriage to Foster, she runs away. Jinx quickly devises a plan to marry in her sisters place. What they think is the perfect ending to their dilemma is really only the beginning of their reality. But, life has a way of bringing you to places you never dreamed you’d go. The old saying is really true “Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it”.
I found this story, patterned on the story of Jacob and Esau to be truly interesting. Can money really buy you love? What does it mean to be truly blessed? These questions and more are explored in a completely entertaining way in this book. Once I began reading, I found it difficult to put the book down.
