The Bofinger family has lost their church ministry in a scandal exposed by Officer Jack Mansfield. Hoping to heal and to restore their reputation, Audrey, Geoff, and their son Ed take over a failing bakery in the small community.
Driving to the bakery one morning, blinded by fog, Audrey hits a motor scooter owned by Jack’s wife, Julie. The mangled scooter is crushed and bloody. But Julie is nowhere to be found. Her disappearance coincides with a sudden illness that nearly cripples Audrey.
Jack believes the Bofingers have hurt Julie to take revenge on him, but the evidence dries up and her trail goes cold. At a breaking point, Jack takes the tiny bakery and its patrons hostage, issuing only one demand: Audrey has six hours to return Julie to him, or lose Geoff and Ed forever.
With only an excruciating and intuitive gift, an ex-con, and Julie’s estranged daughter to help search for clues, Audrey starts the search of her life for a woman who has vanished like the fog.
My Thoughts
As a pastor’s wife, Audrey, has a gift and it is the ability to feel other’s pain, she uses her sensitivity to reach out to those in need. She and her husband spend every Tuesday baking bread for those she senses are in need. When her husband loses his position in the church, due to a scandal, their family attempts to move forward by opening a bakery in town. Although she is no longer a pastor’s wife, she continues to use her ability to reach out to those in need.
One foggy morning on the way to the bakery, Audrey and her son crash into a scooter. When they get out of the car to see what has happened, they find blood, lots of blood, but no body. The mysterious absence of a victim in this accident along with the blood being matched to his wife, drives Sgt. Jack Mansfield to believe that the Bofinger’s have done something to his wife. Sgt. Jack Mansfield, was behind the baker’s dismissal from the church as pastor. Though there is no evidence linking Audrey to his wife’s disappearance, he takes desperate steps trying to discover the truth.
The Baker’s Wife is a riveting thriller. I particularly liked how the author managed to weave the earlier scandal throughout the story, without giving it away until the very end. This was one that I found hard to put down, once I started reading it.
