When Claire Laurent has to flee her home in New Orleans, six months after her mother’s death and on the day that her father receives a fatal wound. Unknown to Claire he has a previous “understanding” with an accomplished, wealthy young woman, which he must end before pursuing his interest in Claire.
Set one year after the end of the Civil War, in Nashville’s historic Belmont Mansion, this fictional novel includes quite a bit of real history and people. The story was inspired by the woman who lived there, Mrs. Adelicia Acklen. Many of the characters throughout the novel are also based loosely on real people that lived during the time. The characters were rich and very believable. The story line was intriguing and kept me turning the pages, long after I should have been asleep.
