Having a large number of coupons in your collection does little good if they are not organized in such a way that you will be able to find the coupons you need, when you need them. There are many ways to organize coupons. The best method of organization, is largely dependent upon your needs.

Trying one or more of the following methods will help you determine the best system for you and will help you utilize the savings that coupons can provide.

Whole inserts – Filed by date of publication – in a filing cabinet, filing crate, filing box, accordion file, etc.

  • pros - This system is a quick, easy way to get and stay organized. It takes very little time to maintain the system.
  • cons - Coupons organized in this fashion are not easily portable. You will likely miss out on in-store specials or clearance deals you may come across, as you can’t easily carry all your coupons to the store with you.
  • suggestions - Find an online coupon database and familiarize yourself with how it works. This will allow you to search for coupons you need, when writing your shopping list. To make maintenance of this file system easier, go through each insert and write the furthest away expiration date on the front, this will allow you to purge all expired inserts.

Small accordion style coupon wallet/clutch or larger size usually called check files

  • pros - The wallet/clutches are inexpensive, can be found nearly everywhere you might shop. They are easy to carry with you in your purse.
  • cons - They can become fussy/difficult to maintain depending on how you file your coupons. Takes time as you must cut all coupons out of the inserts, divide into categories and file each coupon individually.
  • suggestions - One way to alleviate cutting every single coupon from the inserts is to pick and choose to cut and file only the coupons you might possibly use.

Recipe box, Photo storage box or Shoe box type container with envelopes or dividers

  • pros - Coupons will be easy to find. Can be carried to the store with you so you can take advantage of in-store deals.
  • cons - Takes time as you must cut all coupons out of the inserts, divide into categories and file each coupon individually.
  • suggestions - One way to alleviate cutting every single coupon from the inserts is to pick and choose to cut and file only the coupons you might possibly use.
  • examples - The Frugal Girls use a really cute basket for their coupons. Moms by Heart uses a photo storage box with dividers.

Binder with trading card holders or photo holders

  • pros - This is probably the most portable and organized of all the methods. Makes it easy to take advantage of all in-store deals and specials, because the coupons are always with you.
  • cons - Takes time as you must cut all coupons out of the inserts, divide into categories and file each coupon individually.
  • suggestions - One way to alleviate cutting every single coupon from the inserts is to pick and choose to cut and file only the coupons you might possibly use.
  • examples - Beauty in Every Place gives a tour of their binder. Out of the Overflow shares her binder. Utah Deal Divas give us a very detailed view of their binder.

Envelopes

  • pros - This is a very portable option.
  • cons - It’s not very organized and will be difficult to find the exact coupon you need, when you need it. You will probably miss out on a lot of deals due to lack of organization.
  • suggestions - Try a different method.

Professional Coupon Organizing System

  • pros - Someone else does all the initial set-up for you. It’s an out-of-the-box solution for those with little time or inclination to set their own system up.
  • cons - Can become cost prohibitive. May not be categorized or set-up in a way that makes sense to you.
  • suggestions - Do extensive research online to find the sytem that looks to be the one that will work the best for you.
  • examples - Try Moms Saves build your own coupon binder system, the Day Runner Coupon and Shopping Organizer or Stylin’ Binders. There are many more options available online.

Hybrid Methods – combining one or more systems above.

  • pros - You can pick and choose the most useful aspects of each system that will work best for your situation.
  • cons - You may have to go through many different trials of methods to find the system that works best for you.
  • suggestions - Start with the easiest and least expensive method and work your way up to more costly ways. Give yourself plenty of time to try and test the methods.
  • examples - Fabulessly Frugal has an awesome example of a clipless binder method.

How you decide to actually file your coupons is definitely a personal preference. Some coupon-ers organize by expiration date, alphabetically and by categories. Some file by publication date or by store aisles. Ultimately, there is no right or wrong way of organizing coupons. It depends on your needs and time and what works best in your situation.
